DESCRIPTION: | On July 23, 1939, famed aviatrix and stunt pilot Bernadine King daintily picked up a handkerchief from the tarmac with the wing of her moving plane. Miss King, the only woman smoke writer in the world, was performing at the Mueller-Harkins Airport with Tex Rankin and his "Southern Air Aces" in the Golden Jubilee Air Show. The show was sponsored by Tacoma's Young Men's Business Club. It was the last event in Tacoma's glorious eight-day Golden Jubilee celebration and was attended by 30,000 people on the hottest day of the year. The show featured races as well as the three hour long stunt show. (T. Times 7/24/1939, pg. 1 & pg. 3- picture) |
