About the South Sound Photo Album Index [Top] [South Sound Photo Album]
The South Sound Photo Album database is the online version of a daily feature that appears in The News Tribune. The Photography Curator of the Northwest Reference (NWR) Department of the Tacoma Public Library selects an intersting or timely photograph each day from the extensive collection of historical photographs in the collection of the Library. This photograph and an accompanying caption appear in the South Sound section of the local newspaper, The News Tribune. In addition, a link appears from the home page of The News Tribune to this web site, and the photograph appearing that day. The South Sound Photo Album has been running continuously in The News Tribune since January 1, 2000. All images are online in the South Sound Photo Album web site. The new image is available online just after midnight on the day of publication in The News Tribune. You may order prints or copies of photographs appearing in the South Sound Photo Album for your non-commercial use through the link that appears above each photograph in the South Sound Photo Album.
The South Sound Photo Album images are selected from the thousands of images scanned and available on the Tacoma Public Library's Photography Archives web site, or from the collection of unscanned images in the NWR photography collections. The Library owns over 1 million historic photographic images in a variety of collections. Please see the Photography Archives web site for a complete selection of scanned photographs that are online and available at the Tacoma Public Library. Please be aware that the online resources represent only a small fraction of the available resources.
If you have comments or information about any photograph appearing in the South Sound Photo Album please use the feedback form on the web site or write the Northwest Room c/o The Tacoma Public Library at 1102 Tacoma Avenue South, Tacoma, WA 98402. Please let us know of any errors that we can correct, or if you have additional information on the people, places or objects depicted in the photograph.
The Library welcomes donations of historic photographs or materials. Please contact the Northwest Reference staff of the Tacoma Public Library at 253-292-2001, Ext. 1650 if you are going to be donating local historical materials. Sorry, but the Library cannot do valuations for any purpose. All such donations become the sole property of the Tacoma Public Library, and will be processed and disposed of as deemed appropriate by the staff of the Library.
Credits. The South Sound Photo Album images are selected, researched, scanned if necessary, and maintained by the Photography Curator of the Northwest Room of the Tacoma Public Library. Robert Schuler is the Photography Curator. Some photographs in the index were selected by Judith Kipp, the former Curator, as well as through the efforts of Brian Kamens, Glenn Storbeck and Gary Reese of the NWR staff. We also thank all those staff and patrons who have gone out of their way to point out interesting photographs they have encountered in using the Library's photographic collections. We'll get to them "real soon now." Graphic elements of the South Sound Photo Album web site were created by David Domkoski, and the database link and overall design is the work of Lare Mischo. Special thanks to everyone who has helped with the look and feel of this web site. The Library welcomes comments and suggestions on how to make this web site better.
Copyright [Top] [South Sound Photo Album]
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, U.S. Code) governs the making of photocopies or any other reproductions of copyrighted materials.
Tacoma Public Library is not responsible for the improper or illegal use of any copies of materials from its collections. It is the user's responsibility to guard against the infringement of rights that may be held by others and for clearing reproduction rights and copyright restrictions. The Tacoma Public Library does not claim to control the copyright for all pictorial and textual materials in its collections. Library staff will provide any information available for specific items to the user in this regard if a specific request is made. The Library provides such information as a service to aid patrons in determining the appropriate use of an item, but that determination ultimately rests with the patron. It is the patron's obligation to determine and satisfy copyright or other use restrictions when publishing or otherwise distributing materials from the Library's collections. Patrons are reminded that these materials are provided by the Tacoma Public Library for non-profit educational, personal or scholarly purposes and that transmission or reproduction of protected items beyond that allowed by fair use requires the written permission of the copyright holders.
Issues pertaining to privacy and publicity may arise when a researcher contemplates the use of materials found in library collections. Because two or more people are often involved (photographer and subject) and because of the ease with which images can be reused, photographs represent a type of document in which issues of privacy and publicity emerge with some frequency. Privacy and publicity rights are, of course, distinct from copyright. In addition, while it is true that famous people or public figures who seek recognition have already surrendered some privacy, they may have the right to control the commercial use of their images (likeness, voice, signature, etc.). This principal recognizes that a celebrity's image can be an asset in trade. Users are solely responsible for determining the existence of such rights and for obtaining any permissions, and paying any associated fees, which may be necessary for the proposed use.
The Tacoma Public Library is eager to hear from any copyright owners who are not properly identified so that appropriate information may be provided in the future. It is our policy to respond to notices of alleged infringement
that comply with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act in an appropriate manner under such Act and other applicable intellectual property laws, including the removal or disabling or access to material claimed to be subject of infringing
activity. Pursuant to 17 United States Code 512(c)(2) (Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998), the Tacoma Public Library is the designated agent for notice of alleged copyright infringement appearing on our web site. Direct any notices of infringement to:

Searching Hints [Top] [South Sound Photo Album]
The South Sound Photo Album can be searched by either using the calendar control to select a specific date, or by entering keywords or phrases in the search box.
The calendar control allows you to click on a specific day in order to display the South Sound Photo Album image which appeared in The News Tribune on that day. By default the image for today will appear. Days in the future are not available. The calendar goes back to January 2000, when the South Sound Photo Album feature first appeared in The News Tribune. Click on the number that represents the specific day you are interested in to display the image and description in the right hand side of the web page. For example click on the number 1 in the current month calendar to see the South Sound Photo Album image that appeared on 5-1-2013. You can click on the months listed below the calendar to change the calendar display to that specific month in the currently selected year. For example, if you are viewing the calendar for December 2002, click on the Jan link to display the calendar for January 2002. The image you selected does not change even though the calendar does change. You can click on the years listed below the calendar to change the calendar to display to the selected month in that year. For example, if you are viewing the January 2013 calendar, you can click on the 2000 link to display the calendar for January 2000.
The Quick Search box can be used to search the South Sound Photo Album for particular topics, people or events. Enter a word or words into this box and click on the [Go] button to search the database. The word or words you enter into this box will be compared with the descriptive information and a list of up to 100 South Sound Photo Album records will appear. Entering a single unique keyword is the most productive way of searching. Enter a last name (particularly since you may not know how the first name was entered or if we used just the initial of a first name), a specific item or topic. The search will automatically look for both singular and plural forms of the word or words you enter, as well as the most common variant word forms -- thus "fly" will find "fly" or "flies" and even "flying". If you enter more than one word, the search will look for those words as a phrase unless you tell it differently. Entering "Hooker Company" will retrieve no records, but "hooker and company" will find at least one record. The difference is that the description includes "Hooker Electrochemical Company" and unless you use the boolean "and" it only looks for the words you enter in the exact order you enter them. This can be especially important in searching for names. "Robert Goettling" retrieves no records since the description refers to "Robert F. Goettling". "Robert and Goettling" will find this record. You can use the boolean words "and" "or" and "not", and create quite complicated searches. However, remember there are only 365 records for each year and the database is quite small, so being too precise is probably not important. Best advice is to use a single not too common word, or two or three such words combined with "and".
The highlighted labels in the descriptive portion of the display will not work for searching, since EVERY record in the collection has that word in it. Don't search for the words series, date, description, imagetype, address, subjects, collection, photographer, etc. Don't search for very general words such as Tacoma or Washington or Street.
